World War I Photograph Narration Essay

Mr. Price will have given you the assignment for the World War I esay, but I wanted to post a copy of it here in case your misplace it:

World War I Writing Assignment

Due Date: Tuesday, November 16^th (By the END of class)

Below you will find the assignment for your World War I paper.  Before you begin writing, you will need to complete a couple of prewriting activities that you will do in Google Docs (don’t forget to share with me).  

Personal Narrative:

Using a site like Google images, find a photograph from World War I that has at least two people in it.  In this paper, you will take on the persona of one of the characters and write a 1^st person account of what is going on.  You can set it as a diary entry or a memoir, but the key will be that you include some facts and concepts that are true to the time period.  In other words, do not talk about nuclear weapons or jets or modern medicine.

Assignment 1: Print a Photograph – Also cut and paste to Google Docs and Share with me.

Find a photograph from WWI with a scene that interests you and has more than one person in it.  This picture could be of the battlefield (in the trenches) or another military setting, or it could be people back home supporting the war, or a picture with some new technology – planes, zeppelins , poison gas, tanks, etc. 

Assignment 2: Character Sketch – Complete in same Google Doc as assignment #1 (next page) and Share with me.

For each Major character in the photograph (at least 2) write up a character sketch.  Give them a name (including you) and a short background.  Why are they there, what is their story?

Assignment 3: Dialogue – Complete in the same Google Doc as 1 and 2

Write at least 6 lines of dialogue between the characters.  The dialogue should obviously relate to the photograph and will be interjected into your paper.

Assignment 4: Narrative – Complete in Same Google Doc

Your narrative should be at least 2 pages, double spaced (500+ words) and should include your dialogue from above and demonstrate that you understand the war and the time period.  If your characters have uniforms, try to figure out which country they belong to and make sure that your story is as authentic as possible.

Also, print a copy of the checklist (rubric) for you to refer to.  I will use this rubric for grading purposes.

Open a new window (or new tab) and go to your google mail.  You should find an email from me with a google form to fill out.  Open this form and answer the questions using the powerpoint.

If the spreadsheet comes up (instead of the form) you will need to go to "Forms" along the top of the spreadsheet and then choose "go to live form" 

Word War I - Wordle Activity

Open Wordle by clicking on this link: http://www.wordle.net/create

1. Using your "word splash" from the movie, type in the words or phrases that you recorded.
2. Select "Go"
3. Using the tabs at the top, change the settings (under language uncheck the "Remove Numbers"), change the font and the direction, maybe the color (although you will print in b/w so ot really doesn't matter abouth color other than you want a variety of graytones)
4. Print your wordle and turn it into Mr. Price.

World War I: Cause and Effect Movie Review

Assignment for Monday, November 8th:

After you have completed and printed your Wordle, I would like you to write an honest review of the movie World War I: Cause and Effect that we watched in class last week.  Use the comment box below and make sure to have your name on it.  Before you post the comment, change the "comment as" box to "Name/URL"  Put your name in the Box (first name only is fine) and leave the URL blank.  You then have to click on "post comment"

Your review should tell me at least one thing that you liked about the movie and at least one thing that you didn't like.  To just say it was "boring" and leave it at that is not enough.  Tell me why is was good or why it was boring.  This review should be at least a paragraph long.
